Fluoride-free toothpaste for kids

These are fluoride-free toothpastes and toothgels made for children, with kid-friendly flavors, plus kids bamboo toothbrushes.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the ADA recommend a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste from the first tooth, and a pea-sized amount from age three. Fluoride-free toothpaste does not offer that cavity protection, so talk with your child’s dentist before switching.

Questions

Is fluoride-free toothpaste safe for kids?

It is sold as a cosmetic and is safe to use as directed, but it does not give the cavity protection that dental groups attribute to fluoride. Ask your child’s dentist.

How much toothpaste should a toddler use?

Follow the label. Dental groups suggest a rice-grain amount under age three and a pea-sized amount from three to six.

Why do some parents choose fluoride-free toothpaste?

Often because young children tend to swallow toothpaste. Supervise brushing either way.
