Collection: Magnesium Spray & Balm

Topical magnesium: magnesium spray and magnesium tallow balm for evening body-care routines, from small natural brands.

Topical magnesium, explained

Magnesium balms, lotions and sprays put magnesium salts, usually magnesium chloride, on the skin as part of an evening or post-workout routine. People enjoy them as a wind-down ritual and a massage product. The science on how much magnesium the skin absorbs is still unsettled, so we describe these as body care, not supplements. Our guide to magnesium spray covers what the research does and does not show.

Balm or spray?

  • Magnesium balm (a richer magnesium lotion alternative): Balmy Tallow Magnesium Bedtime Balm combines grass-fed tallow, shea butter and magnesium oil, lightly scented with lavender, chamomile and cedarwood. The Grazly Dead Sea Magnesium & Tallow Balm pairs grass-fed tallow with Dead Sea magnesium chloride. Balms moisturize as you massage them in, so they feel less tingly than sprays.
  • Magnesium spray (mist): Come Alive Herbals Magnesium Mist is a spray you mist on and rub in. The Ritual Dose is a smaller 30-day bottle, good for trying it or for travel.

How to use

  • Apply to clean skin on the legs, arms, shoulders or the soles of the feet, then massage in.
  • Sprays can tingle or itch at first, especially on freshly shaved skin. Start on a small area.
  • Many people use them in the evening as part of a bedtime routine.
  • If you are pregnant, have kidney problems or take prescription medication, check with your doctor before using magnesium products.

Questions

What is the difference between magnesium spray and magnesium balm?

A magnesium spray is magnesium chloride in water that you mist on and rub in. It can tingle. A magnesium balm blends magnesium into a moisturizing base such as tallow or shea butter, so it feels richer and usually gentler.

Why does magnesium spray tingle or itch?

Magnesium chloride can cause a tingling or itchy feeling, especially at first or on freshly shaved or sensitive skin. Try a smaller amount, apply to a less sensitive area, or choose a balm.

Where should I apply magnesium balm?

Common areas are the legs, arms, shoulders and soles of the feet. Massage it in on clean, dry skin.

Does the skin absorb magnesium?

Research on how much magnesium passes through the skin is limited and mixed. Enjoy these as body care, and talk to a doctor if you are concerned about your magnesium levels.

Is magnesium lotion the same as magnesium balm?

They are similar ideas. A lotion is water-based and lighter, while a balm is oil- or tallow-based and thicker. We currently stock balms and sprays.
