What does sulfate-free actually mean?

Sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate are strong cleansing agents that create a rich lather. Sulfate-free shampoos use milder cleansers instead. They can feel less foamy but are often more comfortable for dry, curly, color-treated or sensitive hair. Not every product here is sulfate-free, so read the ingredient list on each page if that matters to you.

Big bottles

Several Davines shampoos come in 1 litre salon sizes, which work out cheaper per wash if you have found the one you love. Finish with a conditioner from our conditioners and hair masks.

Questions

What is a sulfate-free shampoo?

It is a shampoo that cleans with milder surfactants instead of sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate. Many people with dry, curly, color-treated or sensitive hair find these more comfortable.

Is sulfate-free shampoo better for color-treated hair?

Many colorists recommend gentle sulfate-free formulas to help color last longer. Davines Minu is designed specifically for color-treated hair.

Why does my sulfate-free shampoo not lather much?

Milder cleansers make less foam. Less lather does not mean less clean. Wet hair thoroughly, use a little more water, or shampoo twice if your hair has a lot of product in it.

Which shampoo is best for fine hair?

Look for a volumizing formula such as Davines Volu, and keep conditioner to the ends so roots stay light.

How do I choose between the 250 ml and 1 litre Davines bottles?

They are the same formula. The litre size costs more upfront but less per wash, so it suits a shampoo you already know works for you.
