Skincare ingredient mixing checker
Pick two skincare actives to see whether to use them together, at different times of day, or check with a dermatologist, with the sources behind each answer.
Questions
Can you use retinol and vitamin C together?
Dermatology sources suggest using them at different times of day: vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. Using several actives at once raises the chance of irritation.
Can you use niacinamide with vitamin C?
Yes. The old idea that they cancel each other out comes from lab studies of the pure ingredients; studies of combined products found them effective and well tolerated.
What should you not mix with retinol?
Sources advise using retinol at a different time from strong exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA), benzoyl peroxide and vitamin C, because the combination can irritate skin or make the retinoid less stable.
How should I add a new active?
Add one new product at a time and patch-test it on your inner arm twice a day for 7 to 10 days. Stop if it stings or burns, and ask a dermatologist about prescription products.
