Find the right styler

Styling products are where hair type matters most. Here is how our styling shelf breaks down.

Curls and coils

  • Okra Curl Defining Gel (Nature's Little Secret): a plant-based gel for curl definition and hold.
  • Irish Moss Styling Cream: a softer cream for moisture and definition with less crunch.
  • Shibui Creme Gel Elixir: a cream-gel hybrid for soft definition.

Apply curl products to soaking-wet hair after a leave-in conditioner, then let hair air dry or diffuse.

Volume and fine hair

  • Shibui Volumizing Mousse and Shibui Thickening Volume Mist: apply at the roots before blow drying.
  • Shibui Everything Spray and Nourishing Working Spray: flexible hold for finishing.

Smoothing and heat styling

  • Shibui Thermal Protection Mist: use before blow dryers, flat irons and curling tongs.
  • Shibui Smoothing Blow Dry Lotion (formerly Taming Lotion): for a smoother blow-out.
  • Shibui Air Dry Creme: for low-effort, air-dried texture.

Short hair and men's styling

18.21 Man Made Pomade, Hair Clay, Paste and Wax cover everything from shine to matte, and Elixir 13 adds thickness. Shop the full range in men's grooming.

Start with clean hair. A gentle sulfate-free shampoo keeps product build-up down, and a clarifying shampoo every week or two resets things.

Questions

How do I use a curl defining gel?

Apply it to soaking-wet hair after a leave-in conditioner, rake or scrunch it through, and let hair air dry or diffuse without touching it. Once dry, scrunch out any stiffness.

What is the difference between pomade, clay, paste and wax?

Pomade gives shine and slick control. Clay gives a matte, textured look with strong hold. Paste sits between the two with a natural finish. Wax offers firm, pliable hold for shaping.

Do I need a heat protectant?

If you use a blow dryer, flat iron or curling iron, a heat protectant like Shibui Thermal Protection Mist adds a layer between your hair and the heat. Use it on damp or dry hair before styling.

Will mousse make my hair crunchy?

Modern volumizing mousses are lighter than older formulas. Use a golf-ball amount at the roots on damp hair and blow dry for lift without stiffness.

How do I remove styling product build-up?

Use a clarifying shampoo every week or two, then condition.
