Collection: Mineral sunscreen

Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide from clean beauty brands, for face and body.

Mineral vs chemical sunscreen

Sunscreens filter UV in one of two ways. Mineral (also called physical) sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Chemical sunscreens use organic filters such as avobenzone, octocrylene or homosalate that absorb UV. Both work when used properly. The FDA has proposed that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the two filters with enough data to be "generally recognized as safe and effective", and is still asking manufacturers for more data on most chemical filters. Many people with sensitive skin also find mineral formulas easier to wear.

The trade-off used to be a white cast. Newer formulas get round that with tints, sheer zinc, and lighter textures.

Questions

What is the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen?

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as UV filters. Chemical sunscreens use organic filters such as avobenzone or octocrylene that absorb UV. Both protect when applied properly and reapplied.

Does mineral sunscreen leave a white cast?

Untinted zinc can look pale on deeper skin tones. Tinted formulas such as beach rooster, UNGHOSTED and Gud Life Everyday Natural Tint are made to blend in.

Is zinc oxide safe to use every day?

The FDA has proposed zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as generally recognized as safe and effective sunscreen filters. They are widely recommended for daily use, including on sensitive skin.

What SPF should I use?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher for most people, applied generously and reapplied every two hours outdoors.

Can I wear mineral sunscreen under makeup?

Yes. Let it set for a few minutes first. A tinted mineral SPF or an SPF moisturizer can also replace a separate primer or light foundation.
